Values and Ethos

As an Astrea Academy, we subscribe fully to the trust’s values. Astrea’s future success is underpinned by a strong set of shared values. These values are important because they support the vision, shape the culture, and make a statement about what we as Astrea hold dear:

  • Scholarship – We will be informed by the best of academic and organisational thinking and research, using this where we can and expanding it where possible.
  • Curiosity – We will ask searching questions, not take things on face value, seek out the best of what is known and engage in appreciative enquiry.
  • Tenacity – We will deliver on our promises and see things through to completion. We will embody pace, urgency and determination in our focus on improving outcomes for children and on our own performance
  • Respect – We expect to treat each other with respect, in all forms of communication and interaction, and we expect everyone to embrace and celebrate difference; we also expect respect of the academy and community environment
  • Responsibility – we accept responsibility and commit to ensuring we do not place barriers in the way of students achieving the very best outcomes they can, irrespective of their back-story; we expect students to also accept responsibility for their actions

As part of this commitment to improvement, we will be relentless in our ambition to ensure all students, irrespective of their background, can achieve in line with and beyond their potential. We will remain steadfastly unapologetic in demanding high standards and expectations from all staff and students, through the use of clear and consistent routines for behaviour and learning.

The Astrea Way – Our Expectations

We are unapologetic about our high expectations of our students and staff and emphasise that all stakeholders have a responsibility for improving the life chances of Astrea Academy Dearne students.

As an Astrea Academy we subscribe fully to the trust’s expectations. Astrea Academy Dearne’s future success is underpinned by a set of shared core routines and expectations.

Core Routines:

School core routines and expectations are clearly communicated to students and parents and are applied consistently by all staff.  We operate a clear system of praise and reward. We recognise good behaviour and celebrate success, but we will also take direct and decisive action where behaviour falls short of our expectations.

Good attendance is the most vital ingredient in education success. There is a direct and proven correlation between attendance and achievement. Put simply: if you’re not here you can’t learn.

It’s equally important to be here on time. Punctuality is absolutely necessary to avoid disruption to classes and to help the school monitor attendance effectively and ensure that all students are safely in school and in class. It’s an important lesson for adult life too, preparing students for the demands and expectations of employment.

We encourage parents and carers to play an active role in your children’s education. We want to work closely with you and your children’s teachers are always happy to discuss any questions or concerns that you might have. We will look to involve parents and carers in traditional settings, such as parent/teacher evenings, but we will also arrange opportunities to spend time with you to consider key areas of work such as curriculum planning, literacy, numeracy and study skills.

It’s important that fellow students and staff members can work in an environment that’s respectful and collegiate, and where the whole school community shares common aims and objectives. School rules are clearly communicated to students and parents and are applied consistently by all staff. We operate a clear system of praise and reward. We recognise good behaviour and celebrate success, but we will also take direct and decisive action where behaviour falls short of our expectations. The school has a clear policy on uniform, and this is strictly applied. A complete and appropriately worn uniform brings a sense of unity and purpose to the school and we expect all students to respect and adhere to this.
